What is PTPTN?

PTPTN (Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional) is Malaysia's national education loan designed to make university more affordable.

It does NOT cover everything — your total cost depends on:

  • University choice
  • Course fees
  • Scholarship eligibility
  • Available for Foundation (selected unis), Diploma, and Degree programmes at private institutions
  • Loan disbursed directly to university — no cash handling required
  • Repayment begins 12 months after graduation
  • 20% repayment discount for graduates with CGPA ≥ 3.0
  • Can be combined with partial university scholarships

PTPTN Eligibility Criteria

You are eligible if you are…

  • A Malaysian citizen
  • Enrolled at an accredited local university
  • Studying a full-time programme
  • Not already receiving a full scholarship
  • Applying before the semester starts

You may not be eligible if you…

  • Are a non-Malaysian citizen
  • Are studying overseas
  • Have an existing PTPTN loan in default
  • Are receiving a full (100%) scholarship
  • Are studying part-time
Eligibility alone does not guarantee approval — your course and university choice also affect your funding.
Common Mistake

PTPTN Alone Is Not Enough

Most students rely on PTPTN without considering the full picture. Here's what you're missing:

PTPTN covers part of your fees

Depending on your university and course, PTPTN may only cover 50–80% of your total tuition. The rest comes from your pocket.

Scholarships reduce your total cost

The right university scholarship can reduce your fees significantly — and in some cases, eliminate the need for PTPTN entirely.

University choice affects how much you pay

Different universities charge different fees for the same course. Choosing the right one can save you tens of thousands of ringgit.
