What is Nutrition?
Nutrition & Dietetics is the science of food, nutrients, and their impact on human health and disease. A degree programme covers biochemistry, food science, clinical nutrition, community nutrition, medical nutrition therapy, and food service management. You learn how to assess nutritional status, design therapeutic diets for patients with chronic diseases, and develop public health nutrition programmes.
Dietitians and nutritionists work in hospitals, community health centres, food companies, sports organisations, and private practice. In Malaysia, dietitians must register with the Allied Health Professions Council. The profession is growing rapidly as awareness of diet-related chronic diseases (diabetes, heart disease, obesity) increases.
Why Study Nutrition?
Combat the chronic disease epidemic
Malaysia has one of the highest diabetes and obesity rates in Asia. Dietitians are essential in managing these conditions through evidence-based nutrition therapy.
Growing wellness and fitness industry
The booming health and wellness market creates demand for qualified nutritionists in sports nutrition, corporate wellness, and personalised diet planning.
Diverse career options
Beyond clinical work, nutritionists work in food product development, public health policy, sports teams, media (health journalism), and entrepreneurship.
Make a difference in community health
Community nutritionists design school feeding programmes, workplace wellness initiatives, and public health campaigns that improve the health of entire populations.
