Course Overview

What is Chemical Engineering?

Chemical Engineering is the study of how to design, optimise, and manage industrial processes that transform raw materials into useful products — from fuels and plastics to pharmaceuticals and food. A chemical engineering degree covers thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, reaction engineering, process design, and safety engineering. You learn to scale laboratory discoveries into full-scale industrial production while minimising waste and environmental impact.

In Malaysia, chemical engineering is closely tied to the country's oil & gas, petrochemical, and palm oil industries. PETRONAS, Shell, ExxonMobil, BASF, and Sime Darby are major employers. The RAPID (Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development) complex in Pengerang, Johor, is one of the largest petrochemical projects in Asia. With Malaysia's growing focus on sustainable chemistry, green hydrogen, and biofuels, chemical engineers are increasingly needed to drive the energy transition.

Why This Course

Why Study Chemical Engineering?

🛢️

Oil, gas & petrochemical hub

Malaysia is a major oil & gas producer and home to PETRONAS, one of the world's largest energy companies. Chemical engineers are essential to refining, petrochemical production, and LNG processing.

🌿

Green chemistry & sustainability

The shift toward biofuels, green hydrogen, carbon capture, and sustainable materials creates new career paths for chemical engineers who can innovate responsibly.

💊

Pharmaceutical & food industries

Chemical engineers design the processes that manufacture medicines, vaccines, and food products at scale — ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency.

💰

High-paying career path

Chemical engineers are among the highest-paid engineering graduates, especially in oil & gas and petrochemical sectors where salaries are significantly above average.
